A Vietnamese delegation led by Health Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien took part in UN General Assembly Special Session on Population and Development in New York on September 22

Addressing the event, Tien said that over the past decade, Vietnam has made considerable progress in implementing the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

Together with the country’s socio-economic development, the health status of Vietnamese people, particularly those related to sexual and reproductive health, has greatly been improved, she said, citing in the 1994-2013 period, the Total Fertility Rate dropped by half and the Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) increased by 13 percent.

Vietnam has become one of just a few countries around the world on track to achieve MDGs 4 and 5 by 2015, she noted.

According to the minister, in the coming years, the Government of Vietnam will focus our sustainable development agenda on developing appropriate laws and policies that respond to population aging, migration and urbanisation, imbalance sex ratio at birth and gender equalities.

It will further strengthen the healthcare system to ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, particularly for those who are ethnic minorities and rural to urban migrants, while expanding and improving the quality of youth - friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including the integration of comprehensive sexual education into school curricula including life skills education.

On the same day, Minister Tien met with leaders of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

UNICEF vowed to continue support for Vietnam in improving vaccine production capacity, while UNFPA committed to assisting Vietnam in building laws on population and reproduction.-VNA
