Vietnam and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have agreed to continue their effective cooperation in action programmes relating to children for the next five years.
The agreement was reached between Vietnamese Vice National Assembly Chairman Uong Chu Luu and UNICEF chief representative in Vietnam Lotta Sylwander, at a working session in Hanoi on March 18.
Vietnam’s NA and its agencies praised the effective cooperation and assistance of UNICEF in action programmes for children, affirmed Vice Chairman Luu, saying that the nation attaches importance to family traditions and the role of children.
Vietnam was among the first nations ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and policies relating to children’s rights, protection, care and education which are clearly stated in Vietnam’s legal system, he said.
All branches, sectors, localities and families and the entire society of Vietnam always consider children care and protection a common task and offer the best things for children, he added.
He thanked UNICEF for its effective assistance to Vietnam in surveying, compiling and building the draft Law against human trafficking, which is expected to be discussed at the upcoming ninth session of the 12th NA, he said.
Vietnam’s early ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its compilation of the draft bill and other action programmes have reflected Vietnam’s concern and pledge to children issues, said Sylwander.
However, she said, the implementation and the supervision of the implementation of these regulations in reality are a big challenge to Vietnam and other nations.
UNICEF is ready to assist the NA and its bodies in enhancing the supervision of the implementation of the laws in reality, said Sylwander.
Vietnam should compile and issue concrete guidance documents for the right and effective implementation of laws and action programmes, she said./.
