A project to connect the national grid to households without electricity in the mountainous province of Son La was kicked off in Canh Kien hamlet, Na Nghiu commune, Song Ma district on September 10.

The project was implemented to overcome limitations of the project “Connecting ethnic minority groups in Son La to the national grid” that left many households without electricity.

The project, which has an investment of 153 billion VND (7 million USD), will be implemented from 2015 to 2016 within 72 hamlets in Mai Son and Song Ma districts.

Main construction components include establishing 217 kilometres of medium-voltage and low-voltage lines and 19 transformers as well as installing electricity meters, boards and supply in 5,300 households.

The “Connecting ethnic minority groups in Son La to the national grid” project has been implemented since May 2012 by the Northern Power Company with a total investment of 557 billion VND (25 million USD).

As of August 2015, the project had helped bring the rate of households using electricity in Son La from 76 percent (2011) to 86 percent.

However, only 22,600 out of 30,150 households were connected to the national grid, equal to 75.2 percent of the number of targeted households.-VNA
