The People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature) held a workshop in Hanoi on November 6 to discuss promoting cooperation among social organisations in the fight against wildlife and timber smuggling in ASEAN.

Hanoi (VNA) – The People and Nature Reconciliation (PanNature) held a workshop inHanoi on November 6 to discuss promoting cooperation among social organisationsin the fight against wildlife and timber smuggling in ASEAN.

Held by PanNature – a non-profitable organisation operating in wildlife protection inVietnam, the event was within the framework of the ASEAN Peoples’ Forum 2020.

Addressing theopening ceremony, Director of PanNature Trinh Le Nguyen said regionalbiodiversity is being seriously threatened due to excessive exploitation,illegal hunting and trading. The event is expected to offer initiatives toenhance cooperation among stakeholders in social organisations towards dealing withthreats from wildlife trade crime in the bloc.

Dr To Xuan Phuc fromForest Trends organisation said the Chiang Mai Statement of ASEAN Ministers responsiblefor Convention on International Trade inEndangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and WildlifeEnforcement on Illegal Wildlife Trade in March 2019 also reaffirmed thatcrime related to wildlife is a threat and strong cooperation andaction in the region is needed.

He said in order to deal with illegal timber exploitation and trade, ASEANmember states need to encourage bilateral talks to share data and approaches totrans-border issues taken by social organisations.

Dwi Adhiasto, an expert on illegal wildlife trade from Indonesia, said manyhave been found to use social media to sell wildlife products due to highprofit and low risk since 2019.

He proposed that inthe near future, many countries should strive to build a network of informationon ASEAN illegal wildlife trade, improve the capacity of social organisationsand stakeholders in terms of approaches, cyber security, inter-nationalconnectivity and inter-continental cooperation.

Participants at theevent highlighted a need to forge stronger coordination not only between ASEANgovernments, social organisations but also other organisations specialised inwildlife preservation and prevention of wildlife-related crimes viadifferent activities./.
