A regional workshop on the protection of ASEAN’s geographicalindications (GIs) opened in Hanoi on May 20 under the chair of theNational Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.
The two-day workshop in the framework of the ASEAN Project onIntellectual Property Rights (ECAP III) has drawn the participation ofrepresentatives from ASEAN members’ intellectual property agencies,Vietnamese associations, trading villages and areas with GIs, and EUexperts.
This is a chance for ASEAN countries tolearn how to register GIs in the EU and learn from the EU’s experiencesin registration.
Addressing the gathering, DeputyHead of the aforementioned office, Tran Huu Nam, stressed thatVietnam and other ASEAN countries seriously lack information andexperience in registering GIs. In order to rectify this, Vietnam haslaunched two programmes to develop businesses and producers’intellectual property, Nam added.
Also at theworkshop, Head of the Economic and Trade Section under the EU delegationin Bangkok, Thailand, Antonio Berenguer, introduced to the participantsthe union’s system of GI registration, including the registration ofagricultural and foodstuff products.
Representatives from ASEAN members also talked about the protection of GIs in their countries.-VNA
