WTO nominates panel members for Vietnam's lawsuit

The World Trade Organisation (WTO)’s Director General Pascal Lamy on July 26 appointed three members to the panel that reviews the US’s anti-dumping measures imposed on frozen shrimp imported from Vietnam.

The panel members include Mohammad Saeed, LegalAffairs Officer of the Permanent Delegation of Pakistan to WTO; DeborahMilstein, an official of the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade andLabour; and Iain Sandford, Director of the Australian InternationalTrade Group. Mohammad Saeed was assigned as chairman of the panel.

Lamy made the decision after Vietnam and the US failed to reachconsensus on the panel’s members following 60 days of discussion.

Vietnam requested Lamy to nominate the panel’s members. The WTOchief had met with representatives of the two countries forconsultations before he issued the decision.

Thepanel’s members will work independently and will not receiveinstructions from any governments. They will examine evidence and isexpected to send a final report on the lawsuit to the concerned partiesafter six months.

On February 1, 2010, Vietnamlodged a proposal to WTO for consultations with the US on itsimposition of anti-dumping measures against Vietnamese frozen shrimpexports.

This is the first time Vietnam has launched a trade lawsuit since it joined the WTO in January 2007./.

Vietnam, Thailand strengthen investment ties, smart city cooperation

Thailand is currently Vietnam's largest trading partner within ASEAN, while Vietnam ranks as Thailand's sixth-largest trading partner globally. Deputy PM requests faster disbursement of ODA-funded projects

As of June 15, the disbursement rate for public investment funded by external sources had reached only 9.99% of the assigned plan. Although the figure was higher than in the same period last year, it remained well below the national average. Notably, one out of eight ministries and central agencies and 13 localities had yet to disburse any allocated capital.
