Hanoi (VNA) – People of Myanmar, especially the young, need to change so as to seize arising opportunities, Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has said.
She made the statement during a session with delegates of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN (WEF ASEAN) 2018 in Hanoi on September 13.
Young people have proposed new ideas and contributed to the country’s development, Suu Kyi noted, hoping that businesses will invest more in young talents of Myanmar and pay heed to their demand and capacity.
Lauding the efficiency of foreign direct investment in Myanmar, the State Counsellor affirmed that the country will make changes to attract more investment and ensure practical utilisation of the resources.
She voiced her hope that there will be more investment in long-term education, with engagement and effective implementation of youths.
Myanmar has recorded progress in various areas, notably in the fight against corruption and rural electrification, she added.
She spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements in poverty reduction over the years, adding that Myanmar will strive to reach targets in this regard.
The official also stressed that 70 percent of Myanmar’s population lives in rural areas and mainly depends on agriculture. Therefore, the country will focus on the development of agricultural value chains in a bid to improve productivity.
“Unless you work with people, you cannot help a country to achieve sustainable development," Suu Kyi said in regard to the changes of Myanmar in recent years and in the coming time.
The WEF ASEAN 2018, themed “ASEAN 4.0: Entrepreneurship and the Fourth Industry Revolution”, attracts leaders of ASEAN countries and partner nations and representatives of businesses from around the world.
The WEF was established in 1971 as a non-profit foundation and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. The forum engages political, business and other leaders to shape global, regional and industry agendas.
Founded in 1967, ASEAN groups together Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.-VNA
