The 21st Century Panglong Peace Conference in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar (Source: Xinhua/VNA) Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar President U Win Myint has urged greater efforts to speed up reforms to follow global trends, stressing that reforms need to be conducted in a timely manner towards establishing a democratic federal union.
At a meeting with Yangon Region administrative, legislative and judicial officials on July 29, President U Win Myint said: “Only through the establishment of a democratic federal union can there be peace in the country, can the states and regions develop proportionately and in tandem, can the union develop and exist forever,” the Myanmar News Agency reported.
The President called on the administrative, legislative and judicial sectors to ensure security for the people, as well as development, stability and peace of the country in addition to freedom, justice and equality in a democratic system.
He said that the administrative sector needs to support rule of law and should be according to the laws, adding it should serve the people, safeguard and protect the people and protect human rights.
When the legislative sector prepares a bill, it must benefit the people and the country and must be in accord with the country’s situation, said President U Win Myint.
The Myanmar leader stressed that the judicial sector needs to be free from bias and corruption and all are equal in the face of the law whether they are rich, poor, with or without power or authority.
President U Win Myint was sworn in to office on March 30, becoming the 10th president of Myanmar since 1948.
In his inaugural speech, the President promised to pursue three priorities, including law and order restoration and improvement of the people’s socio-economic life; national reconciliation and peace; and amendment of the State Constitution which is the foundation for a democratic and federal union.-VNA
