Phnom Penh (VNA) – The search and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers is a prioritized policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia, a local government official has said.
Mao Phirun, Governor of Cambodia's southeastern Kandal province, attended a signing ceremony between the Steering Committee of Military Zone 9 of the Vietnam People’s Army and Kandal's specialised committee on September 20 to realise the 16th phase of an action plan on the search and repatriation of the remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in the 2016-2017 dry season.
He highlighted the valuable assistance of Vietnamese soldiers to put an end to genocide in Cambodia and revive the country.
He urged provincial competent agencies to popularise the agreement inked between the Vietnamese and Cambodian governments as well as the action programme reached by the two countries’ specialised committees in this field.
He affirmed that Kandal authorities and people will actively work with Vietnam to carry out this mission.
Deputy head of the Vietnamese committee Phan Hoang Thu said Military Zone 9 is one of the units entrusted by the Vietnamese Party and State to look for and repatriate the remains of Vietnamese soldiers fallen in 10 cities and provinces in Cambodia.
Specilised forces of the zone have gathered 6,604 remains of Vietnamese fallen soldiers and experts. Group K90, in particular, sought and repatriated 1,081 remains in Kandal province, he noted.-VNA
