PetroVietnam has new chairman of members’ council

Hanoi (VNA) – The Prime Minister recently appointed Hoang Quoc Vuong as Chairman of the Members’ Council of the State-owned Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).

The appointment decision ceremony, held at the firm’s headquarters in Hanoi on November 24, was attended by members of the Party Central Committee, namely Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh; Secretary of the Party Committee of the Central Agencies’ Bloc Huynh Tan Viet; Standing Deputy Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs Vo Van Dung; Chairman of the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises Nguyen Hoang Anh; Vice Chairman of the National Assembly’s Office Tran Sy Thanh, who is also former Secretary of the Party Committee and former Chairman of the Members’ Council of PetroVietnam; alternate member of the Party Central Committee and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Central Businesses’ Bloc Y Thanh Ha Nie Kdam; along with other officials of ministries and central agencies.

PetroVietnam participants included Vice Secretary of the Party Committee, member of the Members’ Council and General Director of PetroVietnam Le Manh Hung; Standing Vice Secretary of the group’s Party Committee and member of the Members’ Council Pham Xuan Canh; and leaders of its member units.

On behalf of Party and State leaders, Politburo member and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh presented the appointment decision to Hoang Quoc Vuong.

He congratulated Vuong on being entrusted with the chairmanship of the Members’ Council of PetroVietnam by the Prime Minister and with the post of Secretary of the group’s Party Committee for 2020-2025 by the Party Committee of the Central Businesses’ Bloc.

Highlighting PetroVietnam’s role as a major energy enterprise that always has to fulfill many important tasks assigned by the Party, State, and people, Deputy PM Binh said this is an honour but also a heavy responsibility for Vuong during the new development period of this business.

He expressed his belief that Vuong, with many years of experience in the energy sector, will join hands with other leaders and staff of the group to drive PetroVietnam forward and weather difficulties and challenges to contribute more to national socio-economic development.

According to him, PetroVietnam has an extremely crucial role to play in the national construction and defence. During its 45 years of development, it has become a locomotive and a pillar of the country’s economy, thus facilitating the growth of other businesses.

Every year, the group makes up about 9 – 11 percent of the State budget’s total revenue, 16 – 17 percent of the central budget’s revenue, and 10 – 13 percent of Vietnam’s GDP. It has also greatly helped with the ensuring of social security.

Apart from its substantial socio-economic contributions, PetroVietnam has actively implemented the domestic oil and gas projects that are also important to affirming the national sovereignty, while working hard to guarantee energy and food security for the nation. It has also paid attention to energy diplomacy in order to help promote Vietnam’s prestige in the international arena, Binh said.

In 2020, while the global oil and gas industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the oil prices nosedive, with the highest spirit and resolve, the group has summoned every resource to synchronously and effectively carry out countermeasures.

As a result, he noted, PetroVietnam has managed to overcome difficulties caused by the twin impact to have the best possible performance of tasks assigned by the Party and State. It has continued to post profit from production and business activities and exceeded the targets set for core areas such as domestic and overseas oil exploitation and fertiliser manufacturing.

In his inauguration speech, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Members’ Council of PetroVietnam Hoang Quoc Vuong noted that generations of leaders and staff of the group, as well as the oil and gas sector as a whole, have made enormous contributions to national development.

The firm’s contributions are reflected in not only oil and gas volumes or earnings but more importantly, in the undauntedness of its staff in standing side by side with the country towards a brighter future, he said.

Pointing out challenges facing PetroVietnam, he held that to overcome them, the only solution is that leaders and staff of the business have to exert utmost efforts and uphold their traditional boldness and high sense of responsibility, aided by the support from leaders of the Party, State and Government, as well as ministries and sectors.

Vuong pledged all-out efforts to join PetroVietnam leaders and staff in further developing the group with more contributions to national development./.

Hoang Quoc Vuong, born in 1963, graduated from the Moscow State Geological Prospecting Institute. He served as member of the Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thai Nguyen province from June 2008, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade from August 2010, and member of the Standing Board of the Central Businesses’ Bloc Party Committee and Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Members’ Council of the Vietnam Electricity Group from September 2012. Before being appointed Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of the Members’ Council of PetroVietnam, he had acted as Secretary of the Party Committee at and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Trade since January 2015.
PetroVietnam has maintained stable operations and contributions to the economy. As of November 15, it had exploited 18.12 million tonnes of oil equivalent, or 89 percent of this year’s target; produced 16.7 billion kWh of electricity; manufactured 1.57 million tonnes of fertiliser, up 0.6 percent from the annual target; and turned out 10.2 million tonnes of petrol, equivalent to 86.5 percent of the target. It had earned 487 trillion VND (21.1 billion USD) in revenue and contributed 61.7 trillion VND to the State budget.
