A regional workshop on the protection of ASEAN’s geographical indications (GIs) opened in Hanoi on May 20 under the chair of the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam.

The two-day workshop in the framework of the ASEAN Project on Intellectual Property Rights (ECAP III) has drawn the participation of representatives from ASEAN members’ intellectual property agencies, Vietnamese associations, trading villages and areas with GIs, and EU experts.

This is a chance for ASEAN countries to learn how to register GIs in the EU and learn from the EU’s experiences in registration.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Head of the aforementioned office, Tran Huu Nam, stressed that Vietnam and other ASEAN countries seriously lack information and experience in registering GIs. In order to rectify this, Vietnam has launched two programmes to develop businesses and producers’ intellectual property, Nam added.

Also at the workshop, Head of the Economic and Trade Section under the EU delegation in Bangkok, Thailand, Antonio Berenguer, introduced to the participants the union’s system of GI registration, including the registration of agricultural and foodstuff products.

Representatives from ASEAN members also talked about the protection of GIs in their countries.-VNA
