A total of 254 workplace accidents in the first 10 months of the year killed 287 workers nationwide, according to statistics released by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.

HCM City leads the country in the number of fatal workplace accidents, with 56 deaths reported in 52 cases, followed by the southern province of Binh Duong and the capital city of Hanoi with 24 deaths each.

The industries leading the tally of fatal workplace accidents were construction and mining, claiming 19 and six deaths respectively.

The most common cause of death was falling from heights, which accounted for 21 percent of the total.

Other major causes of workplace fatalities were being hit with falling objects and equipment, slips and falls, burns and electric shocks.

According to the confederation, 550 workers were killed in 507 accidents last year, with corresponding figures for HCM City reading 104 and 102./.
