More than 6,000 people with disabilities from 16 southern provinces and cities enjoyed free entry, art performances and food at a festival in Ho Chi Minh City on December 2.

– More than 6,000 peoplewith disabilities from 16 southern provinces and cities enjoyed free entry, artperformances and food at a festival in the Suoi Tien Cultural Tourism Site inHo Chi Minh City on December 2.

The event was jointly hosted by the municipalDepartments of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (DoLISA); Culture andSports; Information and Communication to observe the International Day ofPersons with Disabilities (December 3).

Nguyen Thi Lien, Deputy Director of the HCM CityDoLISA said, the event, the 18th version of its kind, aims to givepeople with disabilities a joyful time while calling on organisations andindividuals to provide assistance to the disadvantaged group.

According to the organisation board, over the past 18years, the programme has involved around 155,000 people with disabilities fromsouthern region.

Meanwhile, 244 wheelchairs were presented to personswith disabilities at a charity event in Cao Lanh city, the Mekong Deltaprovince of Dong Thap to mark the occasion.

According to Huynh Duy Khuong, Deputy Director of theprovincial Department of Labours, War Invalids and Social Affairs, the sectoraims to ensure all social beneficiaries with disabilities will receive regularassistance and be covered with health insurance.

The sector will also promote the group’s access tosocio-economic activities, thus helping them integrate into the community.

Currently, Dong Thap is home to nearly 21,000 peoplewith disabilities, with nearly 19,000 receiving monthly allowance.

From 2013 – 2017, public agencies and massorganisations have conducted numerous activities to support the group,including vocational training courses  andrehabilitation means. Over 3,000 wheelchairs have been presented to personswith disabilities.-VNA

Tien Giang steps up efforts to eliminate substandard houses

According to the Tien Giang People’s Committee, 485 homes for policy beneficiaries, families of war martyrs, and low-income households will be supported. Of these, 284 new homes will be built, and 201 existing ones repaired, with a total budget of 24.1 billion VND (about 984,000 USD). As of March 6, construction had started on 166 houses, with 32 already completed.

Bac Giang to eliminate substandard houses by November

Local authorities have identified 795 homes of poor and near-poor households and individuals with recognised service to the nation that qualify for support. Of these, 475 require complete reconstruction and 320 need significant repairs, with estimated costs totaling 39 billion VND (1.53 million USD).

Vietnamese, Chinese cities to build smart border gate pair

They also consented to promote the development of a cross-border economic cooperation zone through sectoral cooperation at Hai Yen industrial park, Van Ninh international port in Mong Cai; a cross-border e-commerce industrial park; and transport connectivity projects between the two cities including the international railway line from Mong Cai to Dongxing, Bac Luan III bridge, and an auxiliary rough steel bridge.
