Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’sevents as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the inauguration of Thai Binh 2thermal power plant, which was held by the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group(PetroVietnam) in the northern province of Thai Binh on April 27.

According to PetroVietnam General Director Le Manh Hung, the plant has a totalinvestment capital of over 41.7 trillion VND (1.8 billion USD) and a combinedcapacity of 1,200 MW, which is a large-scale project in the north. Read full story

- The freshly concluded visit to Cuba by National Assembly (NA) Chairman VuongDinh Hue was a greater-than-expected success, creating a chance for the twocountries to enhance their long-standing relations in politics - diplomacy,economy - trade and investment, security - defence, and people-to-peopleexchange, Dr Ruvislei Gonzalez Saez, Vice President of the Cuba - VietnamFriendship Association and Director of the International Relations Programme ofCuba, told the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) following NA Chairman Hue’s visit. - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has asked ministries and central agenciesto work closely with localities to remove obstacles for particular projects,thus speeding up public investment disbursement.

Speaking at a meeting with representatives of 17 ministries and centralagencies on April 27, Deputy PM Ha underlined the need to strengthen theircapacity in directing and managing the disbursement of public investmentcapital from the stage of preparation to investment decision. - Overseas Vietnamese (OVs) in Canada have expressed their impression of thehomeland’s achievements over the last 48 years, since the Liberation of theSouth and the National Reunification on April 30, 1975.

- The trading of new-generation tobacco products is popular around the world inrecent years, leading to an increase in the rate of new-generation cigaretteuse, especially among the young, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan tolda seminar in Hanoi on April 27.

He noted that the emergence of new-generation cigarettes has created morechoices for both non-smokers and users of regular cigarettes. E-cigarettes andheated tobacco products are boosting the rate of smoking. Read full story

- Many Vietnamese businesses are interested in increasing trade with Mexico, abig and potential market of strong consumption power, according to experts.

With a population of some 130 million, Mexico consists of all consumersegments. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s export market share in the North American nationhas reached only about 1.3%, hence a plenty of room for growth. Read full story

- Vietravel Airlines is expecting to expand its fleet to six by adding threemore aircraft in the third quarter following a plan set out from the early daysof its establishment. The move in association with a recruitment programmeslated for May in Ho Chi Minh City aims to help the carrier be ready for itsmarket expansion targets.

- Poultry meat export has shown signs of bouncing back since the beginning of2023, according to the Department of Livestock Husbandry under the Ministry ofAgriculture and Rural Development.

The department said Vietnam shipped over 1.6 million USD worth of poultry meatabroad in February, doubling that in January and higher than the 86,500 USD inrevenue posted in the same period of 2022. Read full story

- The northern province of Hai Duong has been taking actions to promote lycheesales, as the specialty fruit of its Thanh Ha district is ripening in thelatter half of May.

The Hai Duong Department of Industry and Trade and the Thanh Ha People’sCommittee held a conference on April 26 to seek ways for promoting lychee salesand improving the fruit’s value. Read full story

- A festival spotlighting cultures of ethnic groups in the northwestern andnortheastern regions will take place at the Vietnam National Village for EthnicCulture and Tourism in the suburbs of Hanoi from April 29 to May 3 inconjunction with the National Reunification Day (April 30) and May Dayholidays.

The festival will feature myriad activities run by 100 people from 16 ethniccommunities living in the village, as well as 100 others from the Thai, Mong,Nung, Tay communities in the provinces of Son La, Lao Cai, and Thai Nguyen. Read full story./.

In his speech, General Secretary and President Lam stressed that Mulino's official visit holds special significance for bilateral ties. He expressed his belief that the visit will not only resume high-level contacts after a long gap but also give new momentum to ties, moving them into a more substantive, effective and deeper phase.

Vietnamese, Panamanian leaders meet the press following talks

Both sides agreed that there is ample room for cooperation, particularly in trade, investment and services. They pledged to step up joint work in the economic, trade, investment, agriculture, port logistics, finance, banking, tourism and transport sectors, as well as other areas of mutual strength. They also plan to continue negotiating agreements on investment protection, aviation and other areas to create a more favourable framework for expanding cooperation.

Vietnam, Panama exchange cooperation documents witnessed by top leaders

The documents include an agreement on maritime transport cooperation between the Governments of Vietnam and Panama, an agreement on cooperation in combating transnational crime, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation, and an MoU on tourism cooperation between the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism and the Panama Tourism Authority.

Vietnam, Cambodia strengthen connectivity, create new momentum for growth

The visit’s focus is expected to be on translating high-level agreements into economic and infrastructure connectivity projects and practical cooperation that benefit people and businesses, said Uch Leang, Acting Director of the Department of Asia, Africa and Middle East Studies at the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s Institute of International Relations.

Panamanian President and spouse visit Temple of Literature

Visiting Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy) in Hanoi, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino showed keen interest in the historical, cultural and artistic values of the World Documentary Heritage site, which houses 82 stone steles honouring doctoral laureates. He praised Vietnam’s tradition of learning, respect for teachers and appreciation of talent.

CPV, Hungarian Workers' Party seek to deepen ties

The CPV pursues a policy of expanding relations with political parties, including the Hungarian Workers' Party, a traditional partner that has consistently shown interest in and supported Vietnam.

People-to-people exchanges forge stronger Vietnam-Panama ties

The October 5-8 official visit to Vietnam by Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino and his spouse is expected to create new avenues for collaboration and open more doors for the people of the two countries to meet, for Vietnamese culture to become more familiar to Panamanians, and for Vietnamese people to have more opportunities to discover Panama.
