Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. and his spouse arrived in Hanoi on January 29 afternoon, starting their two-day state visit to Vietnam at the invitation of President Vo Van Thuong and his spouse.

They were welcomed at the Noi Bai International Airport by Chairman of the President's Office Le Khanh Hai, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet, and Vietnamese Ambassador to the Philippines Lai Thai Binh, among others. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has asked for a renewed mindset in building laws and issuance of mechanisms and policies to mobilise the general strength for development, emphasising that institutions, mechanisms, and policies are the sources of development.

- Vietnamese Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son suggested the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) enhance digital, infrastructure, institution and people-to-people connectivity, while addressing the ASEAN Foreign Ministers (AMM)' Retreat that opened in Luang Prabang city, Laos, on January 29.

ASEAN should work to raise its intra-bloc trade and investment, turning itself into an epicentre of growth, he said, noting cooperation strategies to 2045 need an inclusive, comprehensive, and creative approach.  Read full story

- The ASEAN Foreign Ministers (AMM)'s Retreat concluded in Luang Prabang on January 29 with important results obtained and Vietnam’s contributions reflecting its strong and consistent support for the ASEAN Year 2024 chaired by Laos, an official has said.

Following the meeting, Ambassador Vu Ho, acting head of the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) delegation of Vietnam, told the Vietnam News Agency that as the first activity of the ASEAN Chair in 2024, the retreat identified the focuses and priorities of the bloc’s cooperation this year. Read full story

- The amended Land Law which was passed at the 15th National Assembly’s fifth extraordinary session in mid-January is expected to provide a firm legal framework to enhance land management efficiency and create new momentum for Vietnam to become a high-income country by 2045.

Comprising 16 chapters and 260 articles, the law would solve existing problems in land management and contribute to promoting growth with innovations and breakthroughs in thinking, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha said, emphasising that improving the legal framework for land has been a focus of the Party and the Government. Read full story

- Vietnam had shipped 15.08 billion USD worth of products overseas as of January 15, a year-on-year increase of 4.1%, the General Statistics Office announced on January 29.

Foreign firms occupied 11.06 billion USD, up 1.9% against the same time last year, while the domestic sector made up 4.02 billion USD of the total, a year-on-year rise of 10.4%. Read full story

- Vietnam saw a year-on-year rise of 3.37% in January’s consumer price index (CPI), according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The office reported that the figure represented an increase of 0.31% over December 2023. Read full story

- In order to achieve the target of 6% rise in exports this year, exporters are advised to maintain major markets such as the US, the EU, Japan, the Republic of Korea and China.

This year, the Ministry of Industry and Trae (MoIT) aims for 337 billion USD in export revenue, with a trade surplus of about 15 billion USD. Read full story

- The number of new enterprises and those resuming their operation this month reached 27,335, up 5.5% year-on-year, and more than 1.3 times higher than the average figure in the 2018-2023 period, statistics show.

According to the Business Registration Management Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, 13,536 firms were established in January, a rise of 24.8% from the same period last year, the highest ever recorded for the first month of each year. They added 151.45 trillion VND (6.16 billion USD) to the national economy, a year-on-year increase of 52.8%./. Read full story
