Hanoi, (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

-Party General Secretary and State President To Lam and his spouse hosted an official welcome ceremony for visiting Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi and his spouse in Hanoi on September 9 morning.

Following the ceremony, the two leaders held talks, during which the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation over the past time and sketched out orientations for the time ahead.Read full story

-Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 9 chaired a meeting between permanent cabinet members and the standing board of the sub-committee for socio-economic affairs of the 14th National Party Congress, during which the participants gave opinions on a draft report evaluating the five-year implementation of the socio-economic development strategy for 2021-2030 and defining orientations and tasks for 2026-2030.

PM Chinh, also head of the sub-committee, required the report compilation board to make in-depth analysis of the socio-economic achievements that Vietnam has carved out while carrying out the strategy amidst formidable challenges, and complicated developments in the world. The analysis will be the basis to set suitable targets and solutions to removing bottlenecks as well as handling emerging issues. Read full story

-Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 9 signed a dispatch asking for urgent measures to settle the collapse of Phong Chau bridge in the northern province of Phu Tho, as well as efforts to respond to and overcome consequences of flooding, landslides in the northern mountainous and midland region.

In the document, the PM noted that due to effects of Yagi, the third storm arising in the East Sea so far, torrential rains with rainfall of 200-350mm or even 400-500mm have caused high water level in Thao and Luc Nam rivers, leading to localised flooding and landslides in many places, especially in Hoa Binh and Lao Cai.Read full story

-A total of 59 people had been reported dead and missing due to prolonged heavy rains and floods caused by Typhoon Yagi in northern localities as of 11:30 a.m on September 9, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Hoang Hiep reported the same day.

During a meeting hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) to report the damage caused by the typhoon, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Fatima Tamesis affirmed readiness to provide housing support for the poor, as well as food aid, expressing the hope that the Vietnamese government will accurately assess the damage to ensure the support is provided as quickly and appropriately as needed.Read full story

-Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man met the staff of the Vietnamese Embassy and representatives of the Vietnamese community in Russia on September 8 as part of his ongoing official visit to the country.

Briefing them on the situation at home, the top legislator said the Party, State, and NA are working to maintain growth, control inflation, stabilise the macro economy, and ensure social welfare.Read full story

-General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission and Minister of National Defence, on September 8 held a phone call with Patrick Leahy, who served as a Senator from 1975-2023 and President Pro Tempore of the US Senate from 2012 to 2015 and from 2021 to 2023, and is currently Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, as part of his official visit to the US.

Giang said that his official visit is being made to mark one year since the two countries set up their comprehensive strategic partnership for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development, with an aim to implement defence cooperation contents reached by high-ranking leaders in the Joint Statement on the upgrade of the relations, and to further promote defence collaboration in various areas, including delegation exchanges, dialogues and consultations, settlement of war consequences, United Nations peacekeeping, training, humanitarian assistance/disaster relief, cybersecurity, and military medicine.Read full story

-Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung inspected the construction of and assessed challenges facing several Vietnamese-invested projects in southern Laos on September 7-8.

On September 7, he visited the Kaleum coal mine operated by Phonesack company and the proposed site for the Kaleum Coal Fired Power Plant now being developed in Sekong province.Read full story

-According to the latest report from the General Statistics Office, domestic companies produced about 280,500 new motorcycles in August, a 5.8% decrease compared to July.

However, production surged by 30.9% year-on-year, highlighting the positive growth of Vietnam’s motorcycle manufacturing sector.Read full story

- The Lang Son Geopark in the northern province of Lang Son has been officially recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, according to the provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The decision was made following a vote at a meeting of the council on September 8 in the northern province of Cao Bang in the framework of the 8th International Conference of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for the Asia-Pacific Region.Read full story/.

Vietnam reaffirms goodwill in adhering to 1982 UNCLOS

Vietnam, Belgium boost parliamentary cooperation, deepen bilateral relations

Toi called on the Belgian Senate to continue supporting stronger Vietnam-EU relations, including the effective implementation of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), the ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA), and promoting the European Commission's early removal of its "yellow card" warning against Vietnamese seafood exports, in recognition of Vietnam's efforts to improve its legal framework and promote sustainable fisheries management.

Senior military officer inspects martyrs’ remains search at Le Thị Rieng Park

Nghia described the ongoing 500-day campaign as a sacred mission that embodies the Vietnamese tradition of remembering those who served and sacrificed for the nation. PM calls for building elite, professional international search and rescue force

During its mission from June 29 to July 7, the team worked around the clock under extremely hazardous conditions amid heavily damaged and contaminated disaster zones. Despite the challenges, rescue personnel recovered 57 victims' bodies and handed them over to local authorities and families. They also identified and reported several suspected locations where additional victims might be trapped.

In Vietnamese cultural life, gratitude toward preceding generations has long been preserved as an integral part of the nation's identity. Border community twinning strengthens Vietnam–Laos friendship
