Another strong quake strikes Philippines

Hanoi (VNA) - An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude hit thesouthern island of Samar, the Philippines, on April 23, a day after a 6.1 quakerattled the country's north.

There is no threat of a tsunami, said the PhilippineInstitute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

On April 22, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Gutad town onthe Philippines’ Luzon island. The number of toll has climbed up to 16 people.The disaster also left 81 others injured, and 14 remaining unaccounted for.

Phivolcs said it has recorded more than 400 low-magnitudeaftershocks since April 22 night.

The country lies within the Ring of Fire, a vast PacificOcean region where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Phivolcs recordsan average of 20 earthquakes a day and 100 to 150 earthquakes are felt peryear.-VNA
