ASEAN advised to have regional development fund

Bangkok (VNA) – Former Secretary General of the Association ofSoutheast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Surin Pitsuwan has called on the bloc’s membernations to jointly develop a regional development fund to address its lack ofinfrastructural development.

At the recent“ASEAN@50: In Retrospect” forum in Bangkok, he said the region must stoprelying on aid from outside countries, and warned disputes seen in the socalled Brexit when the UK left the European Union.

He suggested ASEANset aside 100 billion USD for infrastructural development, to be managed by theAsian Development Bank (ADB).

The fund would bedispersed to nations that need it the most and promote independence for theregion, he said.

The region requires at least 2 trillion USD tosolve its infrastructural problems, he commented.-VNA

To this end, Vietnam proposed three strategic priorities for ASEAN cooperation. First, ASEAN should expand and harmonise mutual recognition mechanisms by increasing the scope and number of Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) in the region; and promote the role of the ASEAN TVET Council (ATC) in connecting national skills certification systems with regional and global standards, based on national occupational skills qualification frameworks and regional references.

Vietnam advances qualifications referencing to support labour mobility in ASEAN

ASEAN Armies' Open Volleyball Tournament 2026 kicks off in Hanoi
