ASEAN-Japan Summit opens in Hanoi

With Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in the chair, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and the ASEAN leaders will review and map out directions for the ASEAN-Japan dialogue relation for the near future as well as exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

In his opening remarks, PM Dung underlined the significance of the ASEAN-Japan strategic partnership, considering it one of the most crucial of the bloc’s external relations.

Vietnam in particular and ASEAN in general look forwards to a deepening of the comprehensive relationship between ASEAN and Japan, with a view of exploring all available potentials and turning cooperation into reality and efficiency, contributing to speeding up regional integration in East Asia, said the PM.

As Country Coordinator, Indonesia informed the meeting of recent positive achievements in ASEAN-Japan dialogue relations. The ASEAN leaders noted with satisfaction the outcomes of the Plan of Action to realise the “Tokyo Declaration for a Dynamic and Enduring ASEAN-Japan Partnership in the New Millennium.”

They praised Japan’s support for ASEAN’s efforts to build a community, narrowing the development gap and enhancing regional connectivity, as well as ASEAN’s central role in the regional cooperation process.

The Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund’s role was applauded, especially the emergency assistance of 62 billion USD to help the bloc address adverse impacts of the financial crisis.

During the meeting, ASEAN and Japan agreed to step up efforts to ensure a long-lasting, friendly partnership for peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

The leaders tasked their respective ministers and senior officials to explore practical measures to promote trade and economic cooperation.

They stressed on the need to carry out the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) and the initiative on “a decade towards the Green Mekong”; strengthening cooperation to deal with global issues regarding environment degradation, natural disasters, diseases, counter-terrorism, maritime and energy security and boosting people-to-people exchanges.

They all agreed to step up consultations and coordination on regional and international issues of common interest for peace, stability and development in the East Asian region as well as strengthen cooperation for economic recovery and sustainable development, and effectively coping with emerging challenges.
