ASEAN sends aid to typhoon victims in Vietnam

Khanh Hoa (VNA) - An aid package from theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for victims of typhoon Damreyarrived at Cam Ranh International Airport in the central province of Khanh Hoaon November 16.

The package includes 600 sets of household utensils, 3,000 sets of personalhygiene aids, 1,000 sets of house repair tools, an aluminium-clad ship and a 40HP engine. 

The goods, worth more than 174,000 USD, were sent by the Jakarta-based ASEANCo-ordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on DisasterManagement, the primary regional co-ordinating agency on disastermanagement and emergency response.

The action is based on the ASEAN spirit of “One ASEAN, one response”, agreedupon by all members last year. It calls for fast and collective responseto disasters in and outside the region.

Tran Quang Hoai, Director of the Department of Natural Disaster Prevention andControl, said it was the second time this year that ASEAN had supporteddisaster-hit regions in Vietnam. The first time was to support victims of flashfloods and landslides in the northern mountainous area last August.

Typhoon Damrey, the 12th major storm in the East Sea, hit Vietnam’s southcentral coast on November 4.

Following downpours and floods had claimed 89 lives and left 18 missing and 174others injured in central and Central Highlands localities as of November 7,according to the National Committee for Search and Rescue.-VNA

Public order crime drops 22.55% in first half

In the field of economic crime, 2,096 cases involving 4,194 suspects were prosecuted in the first half. For corruption and position-related crimes, 370 cases and 1,042 suspects were brought to trial. Meanwhile, police uncovered 11,687 drug-related cases involving 22,863 individuals.
