The Australian Government Aid Programme (AusAid) will help in the organisation of Earth Hour 2010 on March 27 to raise people’s awareness about climate change.
AusAid has partnered with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Vietnam to spread the message of Earth Hour – the global campaign which asks people to switch off their lights for one hour to cities and provinces across Vietnam.
This year, 20 provinces and cities in Vietnam have registered to take part, compared to six last year when the country joined the campaign for the first time.
“This partnership with WWF Vietnam supports our broader joint climate change initiatives with the Government of Vietnam,” said Counsellor for the AusAid programme in Vietnam Kerry Groves.
“Over the next five years, we intend to focus in particular on the Mekong delta region, which is predicted to be one of the areas worst affected by climate change,” he said.
The impacts of climate change are already being observed in Vietnam where extreme weather events are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity. Numerous recent studies, including the WWF Mega-Stress for Mega-Cities report, have highlighted Vietnam ’s vulnerability to climate change and the need for urgent action to adapt to the changing environment and mitigate further impacts./.
