Australia supports low-income earners in Vietnam

Australian Ambassador to Vietnam Allaster Cox on April 11 announced the Australian Government’s financial support for 13 direct aid projects (DAPs) for northern and central provinces of Vietnam in the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

According to the Australian Embassy’s press release,DAP funding is in addition to Australia ’s significant bilateral aidprogram for Vietnam . The Australian Embassy’s DAP funding reached2.75 billion VND this year, increasing by 9 percent compared to the2010-2011 fiscal year.

The projects will be carried out in ninecities and provinces of Ha Giang, Bac Kan , Hai Duong, Ha Noi, HaNam , Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Ha Tinh.

They focus onpromoting the generation of additional income sources for low-incomecommunities and the provision of vocational training and health carefacilities for disadvantaged people, including women and children withHIV/AIDS and people under post drug addiction treatment.

Managed through the Australian Embassy in Hanoi and the AustralianConsulate General in Ho Chi Minh City , the Direct Aid Program (DAP)provides grants for small-scale development projects aimed atalleviating humanitarian hardship and advancing developmental outcomesin disadvantaged communities of Vietnam .


DAPfunding is available for individuals and organisations engaged indevelopment activities in Vietnam on a non-profitable basis. A grantof up to 210 million VND is often given to a small scale project and agrant of up to 350 million VND is available for a more complex project.-VNA

Binh Thuan ramps up measures to combat IUU fishing

According to the Binh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province has completed registration for all “three-no” fishing boats - vessels without registration, licences or monitoring systems - measuring six metres or more. About 2,710 such vessels have been registered, meeting 100% of the ministry’s requirements and 2,012 operational vessels have been fitted with VMS devices.

Vietnam, US hold 169th repatriation ceremony for American MIA servicemen

At the ceremony, Vietnam handed over four boxes containing remains recovered during recent joint excavations in Hue city, and Quang Tri and Kon Tum provinces. Preliminary forensic analysis on April 15 suggested the remains may belong to US MIAs and they will be sent to Hawaii for further identification.

Second government legislation meeting reviews draft bills

In his opening speech, PM Pham Minh Chinh revealed the Government’s plan to submit 63 documents and reports to the 15th NA’s 9th session, including 37 draft laws and regulatory resolutions, all aimed at having a wide-ranging impact on society. Earlier this month, feedback was provided on six other draft laws and resolutions.
