Bangkok (VNA) – Airport infrastructure in the capital city of Bangkok, Thailand has failed to expand fast enough to cope with increasing traffic demand, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Bangkok is among eight cities outlined by the IATA for aviation infrastructure deficiency.

The city’s two main airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, are facing serious congestion, the same problems confronted by cities worldwide like Sydney (Australia), Manila (the Philippines), Jakarta (Indonesia), Mumbai (India), Mexico City (Mexico), New York (the US), and Sao Paulo (Brazil).

Statistics by the Airports of Thailand showed that Suvarnabhumi Airport received a total of 59.1 million passengers in the first nine months of 2017, a year-on-year increase of 6.5 percent, while its designed capacity is only 45 million passengers a year.

About 37.2 million passengers were crammed into Don Mueang Airport in the reviewed period, up 7.2 percent year-on-year, also exceeding the capacity.

The IATA has called on the government of Thailand to work with the industry to provide sufficient infrastructure for the airports to ensure the economy benefits from the development of the global air transportation industry.-VNA
