The Vietnam Bank for Social Policies has been asked to actively design a credit system appropriate to the poverty reduction work in the new era in order to better meet the borrowing demands of poor households and policy beneficiaries.

The requirement was made at a working session in Hanoi on February 13 by a delegation from the National Assembly Standing Committee with the bank on the implementation of poverty reduction policies in the 2005-2012 period.

According to the bank’s report, in recent years, despite economic difficulties, the State has carried out drastic measures on mobilising all financial resources to fund the bank to provide loans for poor people and policy beneficiaries nationwide, especially in the Northwest, Southwest and Central Highlands regions.

During the abovementioned period, nearly 19 million poor households and policy beneficiaries accessed the bank’s loans. Nearly 2.4 million households were helped to escape from poverty, and eight million labourers landed jobs.

The bank financed the building of more than 4.2 million clean water and environmental sanitation facilities in rural areas and over 550 houses for poor and policy-benefitting families and those who had been hit by flooding in the Mekong Delta.-VNA
