Brussels (VNA) – John Cockerill, a leading Belgian group in developing large-scale technological solutions, said it wants to transfer the technology of activated carbon production from coconut shells and coir to Vietnam. At a recent meeting with representatives of the Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium, Eric Franssen, trade and development director at John Cockerill, said Vietnam has advantages in renewable energy, for example the production of biomass heat from industrial waste.
John Cockerill can assist Vietnam in converting biomass energy, with the same amount of heat as coal, he said, adding that the group also owns a technology to produce renewable energy by separating hydrogen from water through electrolysis to power vehicles and transport.
The central and southern regions of Vietnam harvest around 1.3-1.4 billion coconuts each year.
Pierre Lambotte, head of the Business and Development Department of John Cockerill, said coconut shells and coir will be an abundant source of raw materials for the production of activated carbon for export.
Besides, post-harvest straw, which is plentiful in Vietnam, can also be used to produce biomass fuel.
This technology is especially important in the context of the United Nations calling on countries around the world to take actions to achieve the goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.
According to Tran Van Cong, Trade Counselor of Vietnam to the European Union, such technology opens up a great prospect for Vietnam in generating extra value from agricultural by-products in the time ahead.
The Vietnam Trade Office in Belgium will widely inform associations, localities and exporters, especially the coconut industry, wood chip industry and activated carbon production, to enable them to access the technology.
Notably, John Cockerill has an innovation fund that will support Vietnamese businesses in transferring the activated carbon production technology./.
