Benin President Thomas Boni Yayi has called on Vietnam to continue with assistance in agriculture to allow the West African country to become self-sufficient in food.
The Benin State President made the call during a meeting in Cotonou, the economic capital of Benin, on September 11 with Vietnamese Ambassador Cao Xuan Than, who came to present his credentials to the Benin leader.
Yayi said agricultural experts and technicians from Vietnam have helped Benin increase food production outputs from 50,000 tonnes a year to 150,000 tonnes.
He added that Benin was eagerly looking for Vietnam’s further assistance in this field to become self-sufficient in food as well as in employment promotion for rural youth, thus contributing to social stability and national development.
“ Vietnam has made impressive achievements in agriculture after emerging from being a big food importer to become the world’s second largest rice exporter,” the Benin President said in explanation for his call for Vietnam ’s assistance.
Yayi visited Vietnam in 2006, which he said left deep impressions upon him.
For his part, Ambassador Than promised to convey the Benin President’s message to President Nguyen Minh Triet and other Vietnamese leaders as soon as possible.
He also pledged to fulfil his new mission in Benin to gear bilateral relations to a new and practical dimension in the interest of the two nations./.
