Binh Thuan (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has decided to spend 180 billion VND (7.74 million USD) of the State budget’s 2018 reserves on sea dyke construction to prevent coastal erosion in the south central province of Binh Thuan.
According to the provincial People’s Committee, the funds will be distributed among four projects in Tuy Phong district, Phan Thiet City and La Gi town.
The three localities are hotspots of severe erosions in Binh Thuan, with combined eroded coastlines spanning 15 km, threatening more than 350 households.
Binh Thuan is among the most vulnerable localities in Vietnam to climate change thanks to its long coast. Landslides and erosion have increasingly impacted local agricultural production, infrastructure, tourism and the marine-based economy.
Hundreds of metres of coastal land has been lost to the sea in the last 10 years, while residents along the coast live in danger of homelessness as their houses could be damaged at any time.-VNA
