Hanoi (VNA) – Border soldiers in Quang Tri, Son La and Thanh Hoa provinces have been applauded for partnering with Lao police to smash two massive drug smuggling rings operating between Laos and Vietnam.

A letter of praise signed by Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen Nguyen Thanh Cung on March 21 said on March 11-12, the Department of Drug and Crime Prevention along with border soldiers from Quang Tri, Son La and Thanh Hoa provinces worked closely with the security forces of Lao’s Houaphane and Savannakhet provinces and the Lao Police Department of Drug Preventio to arrest seven smugglers and confiscate 42,000 methamphetamine pills, 16kg of “ice,” also known as crystal meth, and 24 bars of heroin.

New developments will continue to be made in the fight against drugs along border areas, it said, adding that the Party Central Committee’s Military Commission and the Defence Ministry have asked drug and crime combat forces and border soldiers to liaise with units at home and abroad to keep a close watch on the local situation to drive back crime in general and drug crime in particular.-VNA
