Ca Mau (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau is working to plant an additional 500ha of forest by the end of 2018, increasing the total area covered by concentrated forests in the locality to 95,000ha and the forest coverage rate to 25.3 percent.
The provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will enhance inspection and direct forest owners to accelerate afforestation. The owners should ensure rational wood density, while paying due attention to choosing saplings, which have a rapid growth period and strong resistance to disease.
According to the provincial forest protection sub-department, in the first nine months of the year, U Minh Ha one Member Co., Ltd., completed 60 percent of the yearly afforestation plan.
The management boards of both Dat Mui and Nhung Mien protection forests in Ngoc Hien district, as well as Sao Luoi protection forest are mobilising local people to promote forest plantation and working to assure that the forest coverage rate is in line with the set plan.
Meanwhile, local enterprises have been requested to seek out wood consumption markets, helping farmers access more stable incomes.
Relevant authorities will work together to enhance forest management, as well as preventing and detecting violations on illegal logging and wild-animal hunting. In addition, the province will channel its focus on communications to raise public awareness on forest protection and fire prevention during dry season.
Measures in response to coastal erosion will also be put in place to safeguard local livelihoods. –VNA
