Cambodia announces results of communal elections

The ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) took the lead while the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) came second in the communal elections which took place on June 4.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The ruling Cambodia People’s Party (CPP) took the lead while the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) came second in the communal elections which took place on June 4.

Online newspaper Fresh News, which has the largest number of visits in Cambodia, on June 25 announced the election result with seal of the National Election Committee (NEC).

Accordingly, the CPP earned victory by winning in 1,156 and the CNRP won in 489 out of the total of 1,646 communes and wards.
Results in each commune and ward are being updated on Cambodia’s national television channel TVK by the National Election Committee (NEC). Official result will be made public in the evening of June 25.

Twelve political parties contested the elections, with the ruling CPP and the CNRP being the major contestants.

About 3.5 million voters, or 51.39 percent, cast votes for the CPP and the figure is three million for the CNRP. The CPP secured 6,503 council seats while the CNRP gained 5,007 seats.

According to the NEC, 89.52 percent of total 7.8 million eligible voters in Cambodia cast their ballots to elect members of councils in 1,646 communes and wards across the country.-VNA
