The Military Region 2 of Cambodia and five provinces in the region have helped Vietnam find and repatriate the remains of 287 Vietnamese volunteer soldiers since 2001.

The information was released at a meeting between the defence attaché of the Vietnamese Embassy in Cambodia, Colonel Nguyen Anh Dung, and representatives from Cambodia’s Military Region 2 and the five provinces in Kampong Cham province on July 30.

On the occasion, Colonel Dung handed over to the Cambodian side financial support for Cambodia’s units and local authorities in carrying out information gathering and search activities in this field.

The special task force committees of Vietnam and Cambodia estimated that the remains of about 5,000 Vietnamese soldiers who died in Cambodia during past wars are still not found. The two governments have set the goal to complete the search and retrieval of Vietnamese soldiers’ remains by 2020.

Earlier, in working sessions with the Vietnamese defence attaché delegation in Cambodia, representatives from Military Regions 1 and 3 and local authorities in these regions also pledged to continue supporting Vietnam in the work.-VNA
