The Phnom Penh Court rejected a bail request for opposition senator Hong Sok Hour and began a trial against him on the charges of forgery and incitement on October 2.

The senator of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) was arrested on August 15 after he posted on social media a document alleged to be a fake version of the 36-year-old border agreement between Cambodia and Vietnam.

On August 18, the Phnom Penh Court issued an arrest warrant for the senator for forgery, misuse of false documents and disrupting social security. Hong Sok Hour could face 17 years behind bars if found guilty.

Earlier, on September 17, the senator’s bail request was also dismissed on the grounds of the need for investigation and security concerns.

Hong Sok Hour’s next court date is scheduled for October 7.-VNA
