Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian Government held a ceremony to inaugurate the Win-Win Monument in Phnom Penh, on December 29.

Defence Minister General Ngo Xuan Lich and Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh along with representatives of foreign diplomatic crops and international organisations in Phnom Penh attended the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that this day 20 years ago witnessed the official ending of the civil war in Cambodia.

He recalled a historical event in 1998 when he had peace talks with Khmer Rouge leaders Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.

The Government leader stressed that the monument represents national reconciliation, independence, unity, sovereignty, development and prosperity for Cambodia.

The Win-Win Monument sits on an 8ha square in front of the Morodok Decho National Sports Complex being built for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Chroy Changvar district’s Bak Kheng commune.

Construction on the 54-metre high memorial began in February 2016.

On the occasion, a three-day festival is being held, including art performances, a firework show, sports matches, and an exhibition.-VNA
