Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Cambodian NationalElection Committee (NEC) on May 23 announced it officially recognised twopolitical parties, Raksmey Khemara Party and Cambodian Indigenous PeopleDemocracy Party.
On May 14, the NEC released a list of 20 politicalparties registering to run for the election.But only four were officials recognised by the NEC, namely the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP), the Cambodian Youth Party, the Cambodian NationalityParty, and the Khmer National United Party. According to the NEC, it continuesexamining registration documents of the 16 remaining parties.
The registration for the general electionlasted for 15 days, beginning on April 14. The NEC takes seven days to reviewdocuments of the political parties.
Cambodia is scheduled to hold the generalelection for the 125-seat parliament on July 29. More than 8.3 millionCambodian people are eligible to cast their ballots in the election.
The country plans to deploy a total of 80,000 securitypersonnel to ensure security and public order during the vote.
In the 2013 general election, eight politicalparties joined the race, in which the CPPwon 68 seats against 55 seats for the then-CNRP in the 123-seat National Assembly.-VNA
