Cambodian court announces jail term for opposition leader

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on October 18 sentenced exile leader of the dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Sam Rainsy to one year and eight months in prison.

Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on October 18 sentenced exile leader ofthe dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Sam Rainsy to one year andeight months in prison.

He was charged withoffences of insult and incitement to commit offences, pursuant to Cambodia’sCriminal Code.

In addition to Rainsy,two other CNRP leaders living overseas, Ho Vann and Kak Komphear, were accusedof the same offences.

The court also orderedKong Mas and Roeun Kimlun to spend one year and six months behind bars forbeing in cahoots with Rainsy. At present, only Kong Meas is detained.

Last month, the PhnomPenh court ordered the arrest of Sam Rainsy, asking authorities to promptlylook for, arrest and bring him to court for offending Cambodian King NorodomSihamoni./.
