Phnom Penh (VNA) – The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) concluded its 39th Congress on January 10, which reviewed the achievements recorded in 2015 and set out this year’s tasks.

The two-day event was presided over by the Party's President Hun Sen, who is also Prime Minister and the Party's Honorary President Heng Samrin, who is President of the National Assembly.

In a communique released at the end of the congress, the CPP stressed its full support for efforts of the Royal Government of Cambodia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, in implementing the Political Platform and the third phase of the Development Quadrangular Strategy, and settling border-related issues, among others.

The document also highlighted Cambodia’s achievements in protecting national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and peace, and ensuring political stability, security and social order.

Cambodian citizens’ right to democracy and freedom have been strengthened and the State of the rule of law has been consolidated, it said.

Reforms in various areas are on the right track and have yielded positive outcomes.

The document also stressed Cambodia’s noted economic achievements with a growth rate of 7 percent in 2015 and stable riel (the local currency).

A backward country having low income, Cambodia is moving towards a near middle-income one.

The document said the settlement of border-related issues with neighbouring countries has made progresses, helping ensure the country’s territorial sovereignty and build the shared border line of peace, friendship and development.

Cambodia has also played an active part in building the ASEAN Community and addressing international matters.

In the communique, the CPP vowed to promote its cooperation with allied parties and civil social organisations in the spirit of national reconciliation and join efforts to protect gained social accomplishments, develop the nation and serve people.

The CPP absolutely protects the outcomes reached after the victory on January 7, 1979 and make efforts to strengthen peace, political stability, security, and social order and obstructs actions that may lead the country into chaos.

The Party would continue to uphold the right to democracy and freedom of the people, while fortifying the rule of law and resolutely combating all actions using democracy and human rights falsely to serve individual interests.

In that spirit, the Party will support the organisation of grassroots-level and National Assembly elections in line with the Constitution and the law, the communique said.-VNA
