Can Tho (VNA) – The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is planning to build its first green infrastructure park in the near future.
The municipal People’s Committee held a meeting on February 14 to discuss the project, which will cover over 0.5ha of land in An Khanh ward of Ninh Kieu district.
Trinh Anh Tuan, an expert from the Research Institute for Climate Change at the Can Tho University, said once operational, the project will not only serve as a park but also be able to help improve the local living environment.
He noted that facilities improving the water environment and reducing flooding will be included in this park.
Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee Dao Anh Dung said resettlement areas surrounding the project’s location have been put into use for many years, but there haven’t any parks for them. It this park is successful, it will also help address flooding and environmental problems which are common challenges facing developing cities like Can Tho.
He also asked the university’s Institute of Environmental Sciences and relevant sides to perfect this project before implementation.
According to experts, green infrastructure is a network of green factors conserved, enhanced or set up in order to deal with adverse effects of urbanisation by basing on the “building with nature” approach, which means ensuring the harmony between socio-economic development and the conservation and promotion of natural values.
In Vietnam, green infrastructure will help solve many urban problems, create landscape values, improve air quality, reduce noise, and promote economic development. Developing green infrastructure will also help raise the value of urban housing and land, attract investment and tourists, and boost trade.-VNA
