Can Tho to build first green infrastructure park

The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho is planning to build its first green infrastructure park in the near future.

Can Tho (VNA) – The Mekong Delta city of Can Thois planning to build its first green infrastructure park in the near future.

The municipal People’s Committee held a meetingon February 14 to discuss the project, which will cover over 0.5ha of land inAn Khanh ward of Ninh Kieu district.

Trinh Anh Tuan, an expert from the ResearchInstitute for Climate Change at the Can Tho University, said once operational,the project will not only serve as a park but also be able to help improve thelocal living environment.

He noted that facilities improving the waterenvironment and reducing flooding will be included in this park.

Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee Dao AnhDung said resettlement areas surrounding the project’s location have been putinto use for many years, but there haven’t any parks for them. It this park issuccessful, it will also help address flooding and environmental problems whichare common challenges facing developing cities like Can Tho.

He also asked the university’s Institute ofEnvironmental Sciences and relevant sides to perfect this project beforeimplementation.

According to experts, green infrastructure is anetwork of green factors conserved, enhanced or set up in order to deal withadverse effects of urbanisation by basing on the “building with nature”approach, which means ensuring the harmony between socio-economic developmentand the conservation and promotion of natural values.

In Vietnam, green infrastructure will help solvemany urban problems, create landscape values, improve air quality, reducenoise, and promote economic development. Developing green infrastructure willalso help raise the value of urban housing and land, attract investment andtourists, and boost trade.-VNA
