The first Ninh Binh GM/IM/FM Chess Tournament 2025 opened on December 21 in the northern province of Ninh Binh, attracting more than 100 players from India, the Republic of Korea, the US, Myanmar, Russia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and host nation Vietnam.
Le Tuan Minh won Vietnam’s two gold medals in chess at the Asian Mind Sports Conference & Festival, which closed on November 15 in Singapore.
According to the organisers, this year’s tournament offers a total prize pool of 28,100 USD. The winner of the men’s standard chess category will receive 2,000 USD, while the women’s standard champion will take home 1,500 USD. Other prizes will be awarded based on ranking and performance across categories.
Vietnamese players took gold medals in almost all the categories in standard chess from July 2-8 in the Berjaya Penang Hotel in Penang.
After seven rounds on April 12, Vietnamese Grandmaster Hoang Thi Bao Tram held second place.
Nguyen, currently ranking 65th in the world among female players, has represented Vietnam seven times at the Chess Olympiad. At the 2024 event, she achieved a performance rating of 2,442, winning three matches, drawing one, and losing one.
Vietnam will send the strongest squad, including Super Grandmaster Le Quang Liem to compete at the 33rd SEA Games this December in Thailand.
Vietnamese grandmaster Le Quang Liem has risen to the 13th place in the world after his impressive performance at the 2024 Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, Hungary from September 10-23, according to the Live Chess Ratings website.
The 2024 ASEAN+ Age-group Chess Championship kicked off on August 22 in Vientiane with 180 players from eight countries. Vietnam has the largest delegation, with 124 participants.
