Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese leaders on July 25 extended congratulations to their Cuban counterparts on the 65th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Barracks (July 26, 1953) which the Cubans viewed as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong sent a congratulatory message to First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee Raul Castro Ruz.

President Tran Dai Quang and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc extended messages of greetings to President of the Council of State and Council of Ministers Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez.

Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan cabled a message of congratulations to President of the Cuban National Assembly Esteban Lazo Hernandez, while Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh offered greetings to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla on the anniversary.

On July 26, 1953, a group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro attacked the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. Although they lost, this event paved the way for the insurrection against the regime of Dictator Fulgencio Batista and the establishment of the first agrarian-industrial country in the Western Hemisphere, taking Cuba to a new era of freedom and independence.-VNA
