Vientiane (VNA) – Construction officially started on the Laos – China railway in Laos’ northern province of Luang Prabang on December 25.
The ceremony saw the attendance of Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and Chinese Ambassador to Laos Guan Huabing.
The ground breaking ceremony for the route was held on December 2, 2015.
The project’s construction is scheduled for five years with a tentative total investment of some 5.8 billion USD. Six Chinese contractors will be responsible for six sections of the single track railway.
When completed in 2021, the Laos – China railway route will be a significant part of a railway system linking China with Singapore, via Laos, Thailand and Malaysia.
It is expected to connect Laos with the region, boosting its trade, investment and tourism cooperation with regional countries.-VNA
