Construction starts on Laos-China railway

Construction officially started on the Laos – China railway in Laos’ northern province of Luang Prabang on December 25.

Vientiane (VNA) – Construction officially started on theLaos – China railway in Laos’ northern province of Luang Prabang on December 25.

The ceremony saw the attendance of Lao Prime MinisterThongloun Sisoulith and Chinese Ambassador to Laos Guan Huabing.  

The ground breaking ceremony for the route washeld on December 2, 2015.

The project’s construction is scheduled for fiveyears with a tentative total investment of some 5.8 billion USD. Six Chinesecontractors will be responsible for six sections of the single track railway.

When completed in 2021, the Laos – China railwayroute will be a significant part of a railway system linking China withSingapore, via Laos, Thailand and Malaysia.  

It is expected to connect Laos with the region,boosting its trade, investment and tourism cooperation with regional countries.-VNA
