HCM City (VNA) - Ballets by Vietnamese and international choreographers will appear on stage at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on January 19, with the night’s highlight being a new contemporary ballet titled Falling Angels choreographed by Nguyen Phuc Hung.

The ballet is based on Hung’s exploration of the contrast between a female dancer’s innocence and male dancer’s toughness.

The dance will be performed by young talents Do Hoang Khang Ninh and Sung A Lung, who won the Gold Medal at the 2016 National Young Choreographer Talent Competition.

Hung studied dancing at the Vietnam National College of Dance and choreography at the Fontys Dance Academy in the Netherlands.

As a dancer, he played leading roles in ballets Luc Van Tien – Kieu Nguyet Nga (The Love Story of Luc Van Tien and Kieu Nguyet Nga) and Carmen. He also won top prizes at national dance competitions.

From 2008 to 2010, he was a dancer at the Amsterdam Opera and Gotra Ballet Company in the Netherlands.

Hung has choreographed several contemporary dances for the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO), including Cham Tay Vao Qua Khu (Touching the Past), Di Qua Tinh Yeu (Gone through Love), and Ru Dem (Night Lullaby).

The show will also feature the ballet Carmen Suite created in 1967 by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso, with music by Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.

The ballet is based on French composer Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen, depicting the tragedy of Carmen, a fiery gypsy, who falls in love with Don José.

The performance will feature Nguyen Thu Trang as Carmen, Ho Phi Diep as Don José, and HBSO dancers.

French choreographer Julien Guerin’s ballet titled Dépaysement based on the music of Chopin, Satie, Faure, Beethoven, Albioni and Giazotto will be featured as well.

The dance depicts a spiritual journey of a young woman who dreams of sharing her feelings with people. It will star Tran Hoang Yen, a graduate of the HCM City Dance School.

The show will begin at 8pm at 7 Lam Son Square in District 1. Tickets are available at the venue.-VNA
