Contemporary, classic ballets to be staged at Opera House

Ballets by Vietnamese and international choreographers will appear on stage at HCM City Opera House on January 19, with the night’s highlight being a new contemporary ballet titled Falling Angels.

HCM City (VNA) -Ballets by Vietnamese and international choreographers will appear on stage atthe Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on January 19, with the night’s highlightbeing a new contemporary ballet titled FallingAngels choreographed by Nguyen Phuc Hung.

The ballet is based on Hung’sexploration of the contrast between a female dancer’s innocence and maledancer’s toughness.

The dance will be performed byyoung talents Do Hoang Khang Ninh and Sung A Lung, who won the Gold Medal atthe 2016 National Young Choreographer Talent Competition.

Hung studied dancing at the VietnamNational College of Dance and choreography at the FontysDance Academy in the Netherlands.

As a dancer, he played leadingroles in ballets Luc Van Tien – KieuNguyet Nga (The Love Story of Luc Van Tien and Kieu Nguyet Nga) and Carmen. He also won top prizes at nationaldance competitions. 

From 2008 to 2010, he was adancer at the Amsterdam Opera and Gotra Ballet Company inthe Netherlands.

Hung has choreographed severalcontemporary dances for the HCM City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera(HBSO), including Cham Tay Vao Qua Khu (Touchingthe Past), Di Qua Tinh Yeu (Gonethrough Love), and Ru Dem (NightLullaby).

The show will also feature theballet Carmen Suite createdin 1967 by Cuban choreographer Alberto Alonso, with music by Russian composerRodion Shchedrin.

The ballet is based on Frenchcomposer Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen,depicting the tragedy of Carmen, a fiery gypsy, who falls in love with Don José.

The performance will feature NguyenThu Trang as Carmen, Ho Phi Diep as Don José, and HBSO dancers.

French choreographer JulienGuerin’s ballet titled Dépaysement basedon the music of Chopin, Satie, Faure, Beethoven, Albioni and Giazotto will befeatured as well.

The dance depicts a spiritualjourney of a young woman who dreams of sharing her feelings with people. It will starTran Hoang Yen, a graduate of the HCM City Dance School.

The show will begin at 8pm at 7Lam Son Square in District 1. Tickets are available at the venue.-VNA
