Hanoi (VNA) – Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh on November 6 held talks with Japanese Defence Minister Nakatani Gen, who is on a visit to Vietnam to boost co-operation.
At the meeting in Hanoi, the two ministers said the visit was designed to enhance their relationship, their mutual understanding and the trust between the two countries’ peoples and defence forces.
The two sides highly appreciated developments of bilateral ties in many fields, including defence, since the countries upgraded their relationship to the “Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia.”
The two sides also agreed on increasing exchanges of high-ranking visits; boosting co-operation in training; effectively implementing the Memorandum of Understanding on defence co-operation in UN peacekeeping activities; and ensuring the freedom of maritime and aviation navigation.
The two sides also agreed to continue co-operation in regional security issues, and closely co-ordinate within the realm of international organisations and forums, especially the ASEAN Defence Ministerial Meeting Plus.
The two ministers affirmed peace and stability at sea are the shared interests of the two countries, as well as the international community.
They shared the viewpoint that all sides must observe international law; respect the independence, sovereignty and legitimate interests of each country; refrain from complicating the situation; and resolve disputes through peaceful measures in line with international law.-VNA
