Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem chaired the annual informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (IAMM) in New York on September 23 on the sidelines of the 65 th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGS).
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem chaired the annual informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (IAMM) in New York on September 23 on the sidelines of the 65 th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGS).

Khiem discussed with other ASEAN FMs the preparations for the 17 th ASEAN Summit and related meetings scheduled for October 28-30 in Hanoi.

They reached a consensus on a draft plan on ASEAN Connectivity and important issues related to creating an ASEAN Community and ensuring ASEAN’s central role in region.

They also agreed to invite US and Russia to the East Asia Summit (EAS) in 2011 and the FMs of both countries to attend EAS in October 2010 as guests of the EAS President.

The FMs also discussed preparations for the second US-ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting scheduled for September 24 in New York and the third ASEAN-UN Summit to be held in Hanoi in October 2010.

They focused their talks on ways of raising ASEAN’s role and image and ASEAN nations’ contributions to the UN’s operations.

The participants praised Vietnam for its thorough preparations, emphasised the significance of the outcomes of the meetings and pledged to coordinate closer with the host country to ensure the summits’ success.

The ASEAN FMs are scheduled to meet with the UN Secretary General and the President of the 65 th session of the UNGS on September 24 on ASEAN-UN cooperation, the preparations for the third ASEAN-UN Summit and other issues of mutual concern.

On September 23, Deputy PM and FM Khiem received Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi. The two FMs discussed measures to boost bilateral ties./.
