Although the traditional Tet (Lunar New Year) festival is nearing, an enthusiastic working atmosphere is still seen at construction sites for key projects such as the Vung Ang Thermoelectric Power Plant and the Son La Hydropower Plant.

Located in the central province of Ha Tinh, the Vung Ang 1 Plant, which has two turbine groups with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW, is one of the 16 key national projects approved by the Government for the 2006-2015 period.

Having started construction in August 2009, Vung Ang 1, invested by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam), is now the country’s largest coal-fuelled thermoelectric power plant. The Vietnam Machinery Erection Corporation (Lilama) is the main EPC contractor providing around 80,000 tonnes of equipment for the plant.

The first turbine of the plant is expected to generate electricity in July 2012 and the second will become operational in January 2013. Once completed, the plant is capable of producing nearly 8 billion kWh of electricity per year.

To date, Lilama has selected sub-contractors and signed the plant’s main bidding packages with world-renowned partners, including FL Smidth, Worley Parson and Babcok Wilcok.

As many as 350 cadres, workers and engineers together with modern machines have been mobilised to construction sites in an effort to complete constructions of the plant’s foundation in the next three months.

2010 will be an important year for the Son La hydropower project as water accumulation in reservoirs will be conducted in late May and its first turbine is expected to turn out electricity in late December.

Director of the Lilama 10 Company’s, Son La branch Nguyen The Trinh said that the goal of generating electricity in 2010 will be reached.

At present, all machines and equipment have been transported to the construction sites, demonstrating that the project is being implemented on schedule./.
