Emergency declared as landslides occur in Hanoi

The Hanoi People’s Committee has announced an emergency situation as landslides have occurred along rivers in the capital city.

Hanoi (VNA) -  The Hanoi People’s Committeehas announced an emergency situation as landslides have occurred along riversin the capital city.

In Chu Minh commune, Ba Vi district, landslides occurred along 250 metres ofthe Hong (Red) River’s west bank and 300 metres of the dyke along the river. Thelandslides cracked the walls and houses of more than 10 local households.

Landslides also damaged the dyke along the west bank of the DaRiver in two communes – Son Da and Minh Quang in Ba Vi district. A landslideoccurred nearby Dong Tien pumping station and nearly encroached the foot ofMinh Quang Dyke.

In Thanh Cao commune, Thanh Oai district, landslides appearedat six locations with curves of 5-10 metres in length and 3-3.5 metres inheight. One of the curves encroached 2-3 metres to the riverside road.

The curves have been reportedly widening, posing a higherrisk to nearby residential areas.

The municipal People’s Committee asked local authorities torestrict travel through the affected areas.

Agencies including the city’s departments of Agriculture,Finance, Investment and Planning were asked to arrange funds and carry outmeasures to fix and prevent landslide problems.

Local authorities and the city's Dyke Management and StormsPrevention and Control were asked to identify landslide areas and those proneto landslides. They were asked to prepare staff and equipment to ensure safetyfor dyke systems and people living in affected areas.

In May, the city also announced emergency situation in foursuburban districts when landslides happened along the banks of the Da River inThai Hoa commune of Ba Vi district, three communes – Tot Dong, Van Vo and HoaChinh – of Chuong My district, Yen Son commune of Quoc Oai district and alongthe Ca Lo River’s bank in Dong Anh district.  

According to the city’s Agriculture and Rural Development,torrential rains, climate change impacts that have changed water flows andillegal sand mining worsened landslide problems in rivers in the city. Thedepartment last month identified sites vulnerable to landslides.

However, in such high-risk areas, illegal sand mining isstill happening.

The department appointed constructors to study and developresponding plans and tackle landslides along the Day and Bui rivers./.

According to the document, at around 13:00 on July 11, an especially serious waterway traffic accident occurred about 200 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai Island. Passenger canoe AG-26751, carrying 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, capsized while travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port, claiming 15 lives as of 15:00 the same day.

Search and rescue underway after tourist speedboat capsizes off Phu Quoc

According to the local authorities, the canoe operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company was transporting 32 Indian tourists and three crew members, including one captain, one mechanic, and one staff member, capsized while en route from May Rut Ngoai Island to An Thoi Port amid strong wave and wind condition. As a result, by 15:00 on July 11, the accident had claimed 15 lives.
