project to empower female Vietnamese migrant workers on Jan. 5.
The 250,000 USD project, sponsored by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), will run until December 2010 and enhance the capacity of the Government and State Agencies to ensure the wellbeing of female workers overseas by improving the recruitment process, increasing awareness of gender issues and providing comprehensive services.
When speaking at the project’s launching ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa emphasised that protecting the legitimate rights of guest workers is one of the Vietnamese government’s top priorities. The project will enhance the effectiveness of the programme to send Vietnamese workers abroad.
UNIFEM’s Chief representative in Vietnam Suzette Mitchell said that this is the first project of its kind to be jointly carried out by a UN body and the Vietnamese Government.
The project will be an important foundation for protecting women’s rights when they work overseas, he added.
According to the department’s statistics, between 20-25 percent out of a total of between 70,000-80,000 workers sent overseas each year are women./.
