Ensuring freelancers’ interests highlighted

Under the law on labour safety and hygiene, freelance labourers should be provided with occupational knowledge and protection skills. However, there are difficulties in doing this.

Working without labour contracts, social or health insurances, these labourers face risks of workplace accidents and occupational diseases. But few of them know about their rights.

In accordance with the law, the State will give financial support to unofficial labourers who are vocational trainees, vocational internships, and freelancers so they can join the occupational insurance fund in case of accidents in the workplace.

Nguyen Anh Tho, Deputy head of Labour Safety Department, Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs said labour safety at private facilities is not adequately considered.

"We have launched training courses to ensure they are equipped with skills on labour safety and accident prevention." he added.

Employees’ lack of awareness of labour safety is hampering efforts to bring the law into life. Employers’ loose supervision in ensuring labour safety is another obstacle.

Agencies hope that supplements to the law will force state agencies to pay more attention to those who work in non-official sectors.-VNA
