Dak Nong (VNA) – One person was killed and three others in a family were seriously injured when lightning struck their house in Cu K’Nia commune, Cu Jut district, the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong, on June 8.

The victims are ethnic Hmong people and have been admitted to a general hospital in Cu Jut district.

Ngon Huu Tinh, Vice Chairman of Cu K’Nia communal People’s Committee, said fatal lightning is common in the area, which usually occurs in the beginning or towards the end of rainy season. This is the first fatal lightning strike in the commune this year.

Meanwhile, lightning during a downpour claimed the life of a 19-year-old man in Muong Khuong district, in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai on June 7.

Downpour rain also caused landslides in the province. The Lao Cai city authorities had to evacuate residents from landslide-prone areas on the night of June 7.

The provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Control and Search and Rescue sent an urgent notice to local districts and communes urging that they intensify disaster prevention measures in the coming days.-VNA
