The central border province of Quang Tri held a sombre ceremony at the legendary National Road 9 Martyrs’ Cemetery on May 14 to rebury 48 fallen soldiers’ remains repatriated by Laos.
The bodies were exhumed by the martyrs search team 584 with assistance from a number of Laotians in the Laos border provinces of Savanakhet and Salavan during the 2008 and 2009 dry seasons.
Since it was set up in May, 1984, the team has located 5,245 sets of remains of Vietnamese soldiers and specialists who died fighting to protect Laos .
The cemetery is located by National Highway 9 and contains the graves of over 10,000 fallen soldiers who were killed during the US war of resistance.
Highway 9 has become legendary for the strategic role it played during the war, as it crossed the Vietnam-Laos border and ran across Quang Tri province to the township of Dong Ha .
The cemetery is just one of 72 martyrs’ cemeteries in Quang Tri Province , which saw some of the heaviest fighting in the war./.
