The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment introduced the first Biennial Update Reports (BUR1) of Vietnam to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at a workshop in Hanoi on January 23.
Nguyen Van Tue, Director of the ministry’s Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, said Vietnam has actively implemented the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMA) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the country.
The completion of the report, which was built by the ministry – a permanent agency of the National Committee on Climate Change and other relevant ministries and sectors and sent to the UNFCCC inter-governmental organisation in December 2014, demonstrates Vietnam’s commitments to implementing priority climate change response programmes.
BUR1 includes four chapters featuring the national geography, climate change scenario, water resources and environment; the 2010 national greenhouse gases inventory report; GHG mitigation actions; and financial and technical demands, capacity enhancement, and aids for climate change activities.
According to the report, in 2010, the total greenhouse gas emission (GHG) in Vietnam was 266 million tonnes of CO2, excluding land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF). The energy sector reported the highest GHG emission, accounting for 53.3 percent of the total, followed by agriculture and industry, 33.2 percent and 7.97 percent respectively.-VNA
